How to Help Teens Make Good Music Choices

So how on Earth are you supposed to encourage teens to listen to Christian music?

The first step is simply making sure they’re exposed to it. There’s a whole lot of Christian music out there, but the majority of Americans will never know about it because they never go out of their way to find it. Many of these bands are just as good – if not better – than their secular counterparts but they remain hidden under the radar simply because they’re not available on the radio dial. Much of the time, all you have to do is just get the music in the hands of your teens. These bands are good and you can leave it to them to sell themselves. Continue reading

Eight Reasons Why God Thinks Music is Important

The pressure of running a youth ministry can seem overwhelming at times. We live in a world that’s waging an all-out war on the Church – and our youth are particularly vulnerable. How to Use Music to Teach

Music is powerful. It has a nearly unparalleled ability to build us up or to tear us down. Sadly, it’s far too common for those of us in youth ministry to have to stand by and watch the latter. How to Introduce Teens to Christian Music

So how do you do connect teens to Christian music? Is there a happy ending? We think so. Here are some suggestions:

First you want to promote general awareness.

A) Play Christian Music – have Christian music / videos playing as much as possible and don’t tout it as something you “should” be listening to. Rather, offer it as an option and let the quality of the production and content speak for itself. Continue reading

Does Music Influence Behavior?

So, how do we put music to work in our lives?

Bear in mind that the influence we’re talking about is not something that cannot be effectively countered with a rational mindset. You can’t blame a song for a crime anymore than you can credit a song for someone’s salvation. You need more than a lyric to extract a decision from someone. But music is nevertheless a potentially potent tool in that it can be used to compliment and enhance a dynamic that is already in place. Continue reading

Our Brains, Music, and the Bible, Part 2

As we continue this articles series titled Our Brains, Music, and the Bible we are going to determine if music is capable of helping us determine right and wrong.

Psalm 42 – A Song About God
While we can see in Deuteronomy 31 that music can be used to teach, the question now is, “Can music be used to influence someone?” Communicating a fact is great if all we’re trying to do is assist someone tasked with having to correctly answer a multiple choice question. But can music be used to help someone make the right choice in a real life situation? Continue reading

How Does Music Persuade Behavior?

Somehow I doubt CeeLo Green and John Lennon ever met, seeing as CeeLo was all of 6 years old when the legendary Beatle passed away on December 8, 1980. The two traveled in very different worlds, not only personally but musically. And yet, together they offer an interesting commentary on the age we live in. In 1971, Lennon released the best-selling single of his solo career, “Imagine”, Continue reading
